Road Clearing and Accident Recovery Services
The Southern Highlands is a beautiful region of NSW between Camden in the north to Marulan in the south. As the name suggests, the Highlands is a relatively high-altitude region and much of it consists of very hilly and rough terrain. This creates unique challenges for any accident recovery emergencies on the roads throughout the area.
The M31, the Old Hume Highway and the Illawarra Highway
The two main (approximately) north/south thoroughfares through the Highlands are the Old Hume Highway and the M31 (the “New” Hume Highway”).
The M31 Highway, otherwise known as the Hume Highway, is the primary road route between Sydney and Melbourne. It is one of the most travelled roads in Australia and was built as a faster, more direct upgrade through the NSW Southern Highlands. The M31 transverses the Highlands between Campbelltown in the north and Marulan in the south.
The Old Hume Highway was the original route between Sydney and Melbourne. It passes through Camden, Picton, Tahmoor and Bargo before briefly mirroring the path of the newer M31. The Old Hume then winds its way through Mittagong and Berrima before finally joining the M31 outside of Sutton Forest.
The Illawarra Highway crosses the region from east to west (or vice versa). It joins the M31 with the Princes Highway on the coast, passing through Sutton Forest, Moss Vale and Robertson. The roads throughout the Southern Highlands, including these major routes, can be challenging for drivers and accident recovery alike.
The challenges for accident recovery and road clearing throughout the Southern Highlands
Road accidents are unfortunately still a relatively common occurrence in Australia. With the M31 as well travelled by both light and heavy vehicles through the Highlands, road accidents can be frequent. Due to the rough and hilly terrain, especially through the section between Camden/Campbelltown and Sutton Forest, clearing the road after an accident can be a difficult process.
When accidents occur in rough terrain the final resting position of the vehicles may not be on the road. An all-terrain crane may be required in order to reach vehicles in a hard-to-reach locations. Similarly, accidents involving large vehicles may need the lifting capacity of a large mobile crane for recovery.
A fast response to accident recovery
When a traffic accident happens, it is vital to have a fast response time. Even in cases without serious injury or fatality, vehicles can be immobile and blocking traffic. The more quickly damaged vehicles and accident debris can be removed, the faster that road traffic can return to normal.
Even more importantly; emergency support services may require specialised assistance in circumstances where people are still trapped in vehicles. Fast response times can literally become a matter of life or death.
On major thoroughfares such as the M31 or Illawarra Highway, traffic delays can also have a substantial flow-on economic effect. Extended travel times for workers or delayed delivery times for logistics and shipping are only some of the negative impacts to the area.
To ensure that accidents are cleared promptly and efficiently it is important to work with a reliable local crane contractor who knows the area. Knowing the roads and terrain allows for the best decisions to be made in difficult situations.
